Ensuring smooth check-ins by educating travelers on new regulations
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, a major global hub with over 7 million passengers annually, faced confusion and delays at check-in due to changing safety regulations.
I led the creation of an interactive online campaign to simplify the check-in process and provide travelers with clear, current information.
Navigating new regulations
When international safety regulations limited the amount of liquids travelers could carry on board, clear communication became essential. Travelers needed to understand what they could bring in their hand luggage and what they could still purchase from duty-free shops. Our goal was to keep travelers informed, reduce confusion, and ensure a smoother check-in process.
Digital campaign for clarity
To tackle this challenge, I led the development of an interactive online campaign that complemented a national initiative. The campaign was designed to clearly explain the new rules and reassure travelers that they could still buy liquids at the airport’s duty-free shops.
Making learning fun
User research revealed that travelers often overlook static safety information. To address this, I designed an interactive test that tailored safety rules to each traveler’s situation. The campaign website allowed users to quickly grasp which liquids were permitted in their luggage, making the new regulations more accessible and easier to understand.
The campaign website also highlighted offers from the See Buy Fly stores, providing travelers with discount coupons. The website opened with large sales promotions with bottles literally taking flight. This approach not only informed users but also drove commercial goals.
Validation and optimization
We used intercept surveys to gauge user understanding of the new rules and conducted A/B tests to determine which offers had the most impact. Based on these insights, we iterated on the design to improve user experience and effectiveness.
My role
- Led UX/UI design for the interactive online campaign
- Translated an offline campaign into an engaging digital experience
- Conducted intercept surveys to validate user understanding
- Utilized A/B testing and coupon tracking to measure impact
